Lan Duong, Assistant Professor of Women's Studies
Though I just started teaching here at UC Riverside, it’s been a thrilling experience to meet and interact with such a diverse body of bright students. This past year, I have taught classes in the Film and Visual Culture program on “Mainland Chinese and Vietnamese Films” and “Global Perspectives on the Vietnam War.” For the department of Women’s Studies, I enjoyed teaching a course on “Southeast Asian Diasporic Films and Literature.” Next year, I’m looking forward to teaching courses on “Asian American Women’s Autobiography,” “Hong Kong Cinema,” “New Chinese Cinema” and “Vietnamese and Vietnamese Diasporic Films.”
While the bulk of my teaching is oriented towards Asian media and
films, my research is focused primarily on the cultural productions
of the Vietnamese and overseas Vietnamese. I have two essays in Amerasia
Journal that deal with Vietnamese American karaoke bars and the films
of Vietnamese American filmmaker, Tony Bui. Another piece on Vietnamese
cinema and a film called Long-Legged Girls is forthcoming in an anthology
devoted to transnational feminism and cinema. Because of my interests
in Vietnamese cinema, I have been working with some faculty members
in the SEATRiP program to acquire hard-to-find, Vietnamese-language
films for our library.
Recently, I made a trip to Orange County and purchased for the university
many films that will soon be available for you to view. I hope you enjoy
them and be sure to drop by my office hours if you have any questions
about my teaching or research interests.
